Roll-On Ball Sizes: Complete Technical Specification Guide

The four standard diameters we manufacture — 9.80, 25.22, 25.40 and 35.56 mm — with tolerances, materials, compatible bottles and typical applications. The guide a packaging engineer needs to specify the right component.

25.40 mm (1.0") Ball — The Global Standard for Deodorants

Exactly one inch in diameter: this is the size used by the world's leading roll-on deodorant brands and the de facto standard of the packaging industry. If you are developing a new roll-on deodorant, antiperspirant or perfume, this is the diameter to specify first — it fits most bottle necks available in the global packaging market.

We manufacture it in virgin PP (the cosmetic standard, smoothest glide) and virgin HDPE (preferred for pharmaceutical and industrial use due to its higher chemical inertness), with a ±0.05 mm tolerance verified batch by batch in our Mitutoyo-equipped metrology laboratory.

  • Tolerance: ±0.05 mm
  • Materials: virgin PP / virgin HDPE (FDA-compliant grades available)
  • Applications: deodorants, antiperspirants, perfumes, topical analgesics
  • Typical packaging: 50-75 ml roll-on bottle
  • Reference clients: Henkel, Yanbal, Avon

35.56 mm (1.4") Ball — Large Format and High Flow

The largest diameter in our standard line. Its greater contact surface delivers more product per pass, making it ideal for large-format men's deodorants, body lotions, massage products and dispensers of viscous liquids (honey, thick sauces, marinades) where generous flow is part of the user experience.

In pharmaceutical applications it is used for wide-coverage body analgesics — back, legs, joints — where it reduces application time for the patient.

  • Tolerance: ±0.08 mm
  • Materials: virgin PP / virgin HDPE (FDA-compliant grades available)
  • Applications: large-format deodorants, lotions, body analgesics, viscous dispensers
  • Typical packaging: 75-100 ml roll-on bottle (up to 150 ml in food)

25.22 mm (0.993") Ball — Specific Fitment for Proprietary Bottles

At first glance it looks identical to the 1-inch standard, but those 18 hundredths of a millimeter are the difference between a perfect seal and a leak on the filling line. This variant exists for bottle necks with proprietary specifications: brands that developed their own packaging where the standard diameter does not achieve optimal fitment.

If your bottle was designed outside the 1" standard, this ball may be the solution without developing an OEM mold. The way to confirm it is a fitment test with physical samples on your own bottle.

  • Materials: virgin PP / virgin HDPE
  • Applications: proprietary bottle designs, differentiated packaging
  • Typical packaging: custom 40-60 ml packaging

9.80 mm (0.386") Ball — Precision for Facial Cosmetics and Essential Oils

The smallest diameter in the line, designed for minimal, localized dosing: eye contour, facial serums, liquid lip products and essential oil roll-ons applied to temples, wrists and pulse points. In these applications excess product is counterproductive, and the small ball is what controls the dose.

It is also the diameter behind the boom in aromatherapy and essential oils — one of the fastest-growing packaging categories — and in precision dermatological and periorbital treatments.

  • Material: virgin PP (FDA-compliant grade available)
  • Applications: eye contour, serums, lip products, essential oils, aromatherapy
  • Typical packaging: 5-15 ml roll-on vial

How to Choose the Right Ball Size: Three Technical Criteria

1. Your bottle neck

The bottle dictates the diameter, not the other way around. If your packaging is already defined, the ball must achieve exact fitment to the neck: not so loose that it leaks, not so tight that it won't roll. A fitment test with physical samples is the definitive validation.

2. Your product's viscosity

Fluid products (deodorants, perfumes) work well with 25.40 mm. Viscous products (honey, dense gels, marinades) need the surface of the 35.56 mm ball to carry enough product per pass.

3. The application area

Small, sensitive areas (eye contour, temples) → 9.80 mm. Underarm → 25.40 mm. Back, legs, wide body coverage → 35.56 mm. The ball determines how much skin each pass covers.
